Tree Troubles
3/13/2007
Mash Press

Well it seems that our black squirrel Martha is having a bit of trouble with her tree.  The bugs living
within the bark have been busy all winter and caused a major amount of damage.  Barney Woodpecker
has been working around the clock with his family to try and control the bug population within the
trees but for some reason the numbers are just too massive.  Although Martha hates the idea of leaving
her home, she will be moving to the hardwood patch, up on the hill over looking the marsh.  She has
asked her friends here at the marsh to please make certain to plant seeds this year so to protect the
future homes of many other critters that will come to inherit the marsh.

Oh my, what a great day it was today.  I took the liberty of going for a long walk and visiting our
friend Alice Owl.  Although she is starting to show wear for her age, I am always astonished by her
wit and charm.  When I asked her to recall the early days of the marsh, in a snap she dazzled me with
a quick response that would have made a gopher fall over laughing.  After getting a serious moment
with her, I did ask the important question and would now like to share the answer with you.

Quoted word for word from Alice, "When I first came to the marsh, there were no small critters.  The
fact that my brain started functioning with some sort of sense was a good thing cuz this was no
hunting ground and I would have starved if I depended on the marsh for food.  I do remember how
little trees there were and all the rock.  Even though there was a lot of dirt that blew in to help cover
the rock, you could still see the rock and the strange glow.  Now that is all I can tell you so finish your
writing and scoot.  An owls got more to do than to sit and tell stories of days gone by."

As you can see, Alice is as charming as she has always been.  I doubt a few more years would soften
her up any but I am sure glad she is still  with us today.

Threat of Flood
3/05/2007
Mash Press

If you have been down to the bank of the marsh, they you have noticed the rising water levels.  This
is normal for the marsh but this year we could actual see some risk of flooding.  With the pending
rain heading our way and the normal thaw run off, the marsh could see water levels rising to it's all
time high.  The community safety commission will be out and about to check water levels near homes.
Although decision to move to higher ground is entirely up to you ( article # 014 of the Marsh Freedom
and Rights  Act) the safety commissions agent will inform you if levels are dangerously high.  Even
if you should not be informed by the agent, you are urged to keep an eye on levels just In case there is
a sudden increase of water draining into the marsh, from higher ground.

Marsh Secrets
There are so many mysteries surround the marsh and I often wonder if there is just one resident
that can answer any of this.  I remember when I first came to the marsh and I felt out of place.  It was
Alice Owl that took me under her wing and helped me to get settled here.  She is very wise and seemed
to have a lot ot answers to a lot of question.  With that in mind, I will make it a point to visit and
interview her this week.

I have many questions about this area.  Why does intelligence present it's self only when we are in
the marsh?  Why can we live in harmony while in the marsh and outside we can be brutal beast?  Why
do so many of us live out a long life, provided a predator does not get us while we are outside the
marsh area?  Why is our memories limited for the time we are outside this area?

I managed to make it close to the rear of the bear den and heard moment coming form within.
Although we still have at least 20 or more days before the family should emerge, many
of us will be keeping en eye on the den to ensure all will go well and according to norm.
Please make sure not to approach the den as the bear family is stirring and it would not take
much to awaken them.  It is important that they remain sleeping till more viable weather is here
and there is some sort of food for them to eat.

Care and Love For Benny
3/07/2007
Mash Press

Benny Brown Fox had been outside the marsh yesterday, when he encountered a live trap set
by humans.  The trap had not only torn his skin but broke his left leg as well.  Benny did manage
to make it back to the marsh but once inside it's boundary he had collapsed.  Fortunate for
Benny, our latest new comer Brenda the she wolf, was only minutes behind him.  Brenda noticed
him laying next to a rock and drug him  all the way to her den where she provided comfort and
heat.  She kept him warm till he was conscious but he is still not able to move around.

For all those whom wish to visit Benny, he can be found over at Brenda's den.  If you have not
already welcomed her to the marsh, this would also be a great opportunity to do so.  This kind
act and her willingness to care for Benny says a lot about her character. It's newcomers like
Brenda,  that continues to makes the marsh a great place  live.

Today, I had the opportunity to survey more of the area.  Trotting for miles to the east and west,
I realize that this area is on one large massive formation of rock and that the depth of it is not
really all that far down.  Also to the west, there is a chunk of rock that is exposed to the elements
and there seems to be energy radiating form it.

Tomorrow, I will interview our eldest deer, Rex.  Rex has been all through this area and he might
be able to point us to some other interesting and unexplained
phenomenon that add to the marsh's
mystery.  One way or the other, we will learn more about our surroundings and how it effects us.

Are you cold?  Well if you're not then you are more fortunate than most.  We have been in sub
zero temps and although we might get a very short break of it, the cold is only going to return.

Spring is just around the corner and some of our friends are starting to stir.  Deep sleep
around this time of the year is very rare.  Our friends that have been in their holes under
the ground have been starting to stir as the cold rains are on their way.

Keeping in mind that natures alarm clock is about to ring, I would like to ask those on the den
opening committee to please report to the community planning board.  Mr. Mole is monitoring for
movement in the dens but prompt action is important as our sleepers will need to
emerge from the den and find food quickly.

Marsh Secrets

Franky Esque did manage to find a little time to talk to me today and although he could not give me a
lot of information, the little bit he did give me has added to the puzzle that surrounds this area.  These
black squirrels have been all over the area and surveyed the land quite well.  Franky's father had
thought that the marsh attracted the northern lights to the area as a form of magnet.  Although he
passed away without being able to prove it, the Esque family has yet to see any evidence to rule
that theory out.

Well we did get the storm that many had expected.  Although the marsh was once again protected from the brunt, don't get too comfortable yet.   While I was out and about trying to find Franky Esque, I could feel that our storms were not over yet.  If you are storm prepared, I suggest you stay that way for a week or two until it is certain that spring is around the corner.

I did a quick inspection today and I am happy to say that there was no damage done in this area.  Although the winds were strong and it rocked the trees, everything stayed the way it was meant to be.

The Storm Has Arrived
3/01/2007
Mash Press

Well it looks like the storm has finally arrived.  So far we have only been hit with very strong winds
but don't let your guard down.  This reporter is hoping to get about tomorrow during daylight hours and
take pictures of any damage here in the marsh.  If we should have freezing rain, I will also try to capture
the beauty that comes with it.

Marsh Secrets
Well, I did  an interview with Willow and now it's time to share what I have learned.  Many years ago,
Willows family moved here from the north.  At that time, very few animals lived here at the marsh and
the conditions here were much different than what they are now.  There was very little for vegetation
and although the water was clear, it had a distinct taste, smell and almost a glow to it.  Willow said
looking at the photographs his family took many years ago, that there was a lot of rock exposed and
maybe the mineral content of the water contributed to the strange taste and smell.  Willow showed me
a few photos and I also feel that could be a possibility as this marsh and its surrounding area is
essentially on several very large rocks.

Having moved our discussion along towards any secrets that may have been shared by any of the first
comers, he gave thought to it and remembered the few words he had heard one of the first comers utter,
"the marsh had to stop glowing before any living animal could move here." I pressed Willow to try and
remember the full conversation so we could discover what was meant by that partial statement, but he could not.

Tomorrow I will visit with Franky Esque.  The Esque family had also moved to this area around the
 same time as Willow's.

Marsh Weather

Hope you have your belonging weighted down because baby, it sure is windy tonight.
Tomorrow .... expect cool, windy and wet conditions.  Then again, I'm probably wrong so don't quote me.

Planning Underway

Well it may not have been the longest winter we have ever had at the marsh but it does seem to be
the one everyone wants to rush.  With snow still on the ground and more storms threatening the area,
our marsh entertainment committee has already started making plans for the summer.  Not only have
they made plans for this summer, they have created an event that will continue on for longer than I
can even imagine.  The humans have the olympics but we have marsh war games.  That's right, we are
going to divide the marsh into two sections.  The west side and east side seem to be the way things work
out.  Every resident of the marsh will have his or her own duties to carry out for this silly little war.  We
will use mud balls, acorns, seeds and any thing else we can put together.  Take the opportunity to let
your minds wander now as you will be needing creativity when summer comes.

Marsh Secrets
It was suggest today that we should look to the very beginning if we want to explain any of the mystery
surrounding the Marsh.  Although some of the residence that were of the first settlers are down
for their long nap, I don't see any problems with interviewing those that are awake.

Tomorrow, I will interview Willow Babbit.  The Babbit family may not have been here the longest, but
they had developed a very close relationship with one of the first comers and may be able to provide us
with knowledge that was shared with them.

Here at the marsh, we have always been very fortunate when it comes to storms going around us.
Once again, we are grateful to the protection the marsh received.  For quite sometime now, Alan and

us.  I would like to remind everyone, the day might come that it does not go around.  Winter is almost
over and we are all looking forward to the return of our many friends but please don't let your guard

Second News Item

It's not often that I run a second news item but today there was a special request from our elected
community leaders.  As you know, this marsh has a lot of mystery surrounding it and I have mentioned

to help us understand the strangeness of this marsh.  We are all happy with how the marsh provides
us with an enriched life, we accept it eagerly but no one knows the mystery that surrounds this area.
We do not intend to find the cause but understanding and accepting is a goal we aim to fulfill.

Although it is only February, the local community has already started buzzing about the pending

our marsh residence, the odor is hard for their sensitive noses to deal with and are not making plans
for a summer location up wind of the swamp.  If you happen to be concerned about staying in the path
of the odor, please let Ernie Eagle know and he will do the best to scout out a new location for you.

Also in the news,  Charlie Chipmunk was spotted leaving his in ground home to take shelter in a
tree's hallow.  Although the ground is still fairly frozen and their is no real thaw happening, one can
only assume that Charlie must be predicting wet conditions soon.

Last on my list of mentions.  Easter is coming soon and that means a visit from our dear friend the
Easter Bunny.  Like every year, he will not have any time to stay for a party but we have been
considering a pot luck dinner.  If you are in favor of this idea, please let us know.  If you are opposed,

We have had a lot happen over the past month and no one here to report it.  Seeing it has been a
while, I guess it is wise to just try to catch things up.

First of all, winter did finally come to the marsh and that had caused problems for a few families
around here.  Because of the mild temperatures and wet snow, the Beaver family ended up with humps
and ruts in their slide so when it froze over, it made it very difficult for them to slide their fresh wood
down to the water. Thanks to:  R. Muskrat, Sarah and Henry Fox, and the wolves from a neighboring
community, all the bumps, humps and ruts were removed so that the Beaver family could manage a
along through the rest of the bitter cold temperatures.

    This weekend,
Jonny Mole made a special trip over to see me.  It seems that Ronald and Kathy Bear
are proud parents of a baby girl.  Kathy managed to sleep through the birth without any problems and
baby bear has been nursing and sleeping comfortably.

We also had another birth announcement.  This will be the first here in the marsh and maybe the first anywhere.  It seems that  Brenda, the red she wolf that has taken residence here, also gave birth.
Although out of season, it seems her two pups are healthy and happy.

That's it for today's Marsh Media News .  Please return tomorrow and see what else is happening.

A Late Happy New Year
1/18/2007
Mash Press

This is my first post in the new year and unfortunately it comes with me under the weather.  Unless snailrider would like to jump on in and take over till I am well, the daily reports may end up being a little late.  I hope those of you that popped in for the news did not get discouraged but maybe did some exploring of the marsh and previous news articles.

I will give you a quick run down of the happenings here in the marsh since the last official news report.  Although there hasn't been a lot going on, there are some events that I think I should make mention of so to keep everyone up to date.

Mrs. Ellouise Fox fell slipped on some ice and broke her leg.  Her husband Raynard has been very busy trying to keep her comfortable and warm.  The nearby neighbors have been leaving bits of food by the door of their den so that all Raynard's attention can be focused on his wife.

Outside the marsh area, the humans have discovered special rocks.  These rocks have a glittery section to them and judging by the intense interest, I expect more humans will frequent the area east of us.  If you intend to leave the marsh to do any hunting, please exit the area from the south or north.  As we all know, humans do not mix well with our kind and encounters usually end up fatal.

That is all for now.  Although under the weather, I will try much harder to get in here and put together a news report.  Please be patient as I am the only reporter working.

This news report will be very much different than all the rest.  In many ways, this will be like a feeler rather than a report.  It seems that things are happening here at the marsh.  The marsh is real and the  news reports may not be about the mind blowing events that happen around the world, but merely small things that are meant to lighten a heavy heart and/or brighten a day in your life.

Todays news story is about that ... a story.  The story, "Secret Of The Marsh" will be slowly constructed here in a special section of our marsh media news.  You will see the work begin, it slowly be constructed, edited and finished.  It might give you some idea of how a writer deals with writing block.  Reason I mention the writing block thing is ... the author of "Secret Of The Marsh" experiences that problem often and has a hard time defeating it.

This is only the short end of the list of things that will happen for 2007.  In this marsh, this is the year of the moose and much like a moose, it will stand prominent, proud and strong.  The marsh will offer comfort, friendship, warmth, logic and residence to all that enter.

This is my last post till after the new year.  I wish all of you a happy and safe holiday.  May your 2006 end on a happy note and your 2007 begin with hope and promise.

News in brief:  Well another Christmas has passed and many of us here at the marsh are very pleased with all the love and consideration we expressed to one another during the joyous holiday.  Breaking bread, sharing thoughts and just being with each other is something not practiced daily here and very seldom practiced outside of the marsh.  In some species it is a custom to give and receive gifts where as other customs might be to ignore the day.  Either way, there are many ways to have spend the day but here at the marsh, we do things that just seem right to us.

Speaking of doing things that are right to us,
Willow Babbit has asked that that I post a thank you in today's articles.  I found it fitting to include a picture of the new home that so many of you have contributed to building.  With the weather being has it has, and not a normal winter, it only seemed fitting that we all helped out and built him a new home with the materials we could find.  He never did complain but it was easy to see that he was cold and damp in his old home so close to the swamp and moving him to higher ground was our show of affection for him.  In response to Willow's thank you, I am pretty sure we all say "You're Welcome!"

You have one more news story from our marsh before the New Year.  If you do not stop in prior, please take our New Year blessing and we ask you to stay safe.  Practice good judgment and drive sober and be cautious of those who do not.

thicket

As you can see, the thicket trail is quite clear and well used.  Seems that many of our local marsh residence have been busy collecting and bringing food for the great feast.  It is so hard to imagine that the time is only a few days away.

The thicket has been the host of so very many shared meals and each one of them memorable.  Walking down that trail yesterday, was as energizing as the water from the marsh.  Each and every step I took, there was almost some sort of excitement that charged through my body, knowing that once again, I will be surrounded by my dearest friends and neighbors.  We have all been so very close and have cared for each other over the many years here.  The thought of seeing everyone together once again, is more than a thrill to me.  I consider each and every resident of the marsh my family and I so enjoy these truly wonderful celebrations.

Taking a moment to remember our sleeping friends.  If you would like to help in bringing food to their dens, please let one of the planners know and they will set up something for you to deliver after the feast, on your way home.

Just a reminder to all, we are expecting snow in the next few days.  Although the trail is covered with leaves for most of the part, do be careful when coming down the north side of the rock. The one section has collected a lot of moisture in the past week and ice has formed in a few sections.  The slippery sections are visible at the moment but once the snow falls, it will be very dangerous for all long legged creatures like myself.

Well, this is my last news story till Christmas.  I wish you all a Merry Christmas and may you be touched with joy and love.

Busy As A Beaver

skating

Over the past week, the beaver family has been very busy getting a nice skating area prepared for our annual Christmas day community skate.   Of all the many ways we celebrate Christmas at the marsh, the one thing that has always been a favorite is skating.

Alan Beaver and his family have finally finished damning off a section of the upper swamp.  Although they worked around the clock, trying to make a section that had no water running in or out, it was a concern that all their work would be in vain.  Still water will freeze quickly, but without a feed or flow going to it, there was a very high probability that the area would dry up before the water would have had enough chance to freeze over.

If you look closely at the photo, you will be able to see that Alan did over flow that section before he damned it off from the rest of the swamp.  It was very important for him to be certain that the water was shallow enough, and would freeze very quickly, reducing the chances of drying up.  Although our marsh does not have an official engineer, Alan has built a number of damns in the past, making him very knowledgeable.  This is not the first year for him and his family to build a skating area and it is expected that he and his family will continue on, for many years to come.

Alan checked the ice formation and informed the council of it's progress.  The council is confident of the situation and has now announced it as the official
for Christmas day site. It is expected that this surface will be fully frozen  and all will be able to skate before we share our great feast.

Chaotic Christmas in the Makings
12/20/06
Mash Press

We are only days away form Christmas and I have to admit, we here at the marsh are not prepared.  With the weather being so very different this year, it's like mother nature did not want to co-operate and allow us to get all our prep work done before winter.

Today at the bank of the marsh, I had taken time to talk to the many residents here about how they intended to spend their Christmas.  Some of them admitted that they were not certain as they had not had the chance to prepare for the holiday.  Others felt that even though they were as prepared as they could get, this year things were going to be much different then Christmas's of the past and were hoping that any short comings might go un-noticed as long as they were around loved one's and friends.

Although ice is starting to form on the top of the many area's of water around the marsh, there has not been an official skating spot announced for the christmas day sliding event.  Although the marsh is the best area for larger animals to slide, we may need to look at the upper eastern swamp this year  as  safety must always play key importance.

A quick reminder to all those that have volunteered to help with the Christmas meal.  With the rain and melting of the snow, we have yet another chance to gather food for the feast.  If you haven't done so yet, please begin to gather food and bring it to the thicket.  The flying squirrel family has volunteered to watch over it and if they should see any intruders, they will be certain to notify marsh security at which point our resident timber wolf would be more than happy to challenge the intruder.
Please be certain to read Fridays news report for further instructions, schedules and announcement regarding Christmas activities.

Today's Big Story
12/19/06
Mash Press

Today our big story is about Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Bear.  It seems that Mrs. Bear is expecting a cub this year and like all other years and all other bears, the residents of the marsh would like to be kept up to date as to her status.  Although Barney and Mary Skunk will be  staying in the same den as Ronald and Kathy Bear, this winter, Jonny Mole will be making regular trips into the den to check on the status of Kathy Bear.   Once the cub has been born, there will be many step taken to ensure that  the cub and mother will stay warm and healthy over the long winter period.

Although Ronald and Kathy retired to the den a little over 20 days ago, it is said that Kathy Bear has not entered into a deep sleep as of yet.  If you happen to be in the area of the den, please be certain not to make too much noise as we are hoping she will encounter her deep, hibernation sleep soon.

Those of you that would like to donate some nuts, leaves and fur bunches, please make certain to contact Jonny Mole and he will direct you to the best place to leave it.  Although he will not be the one carting into the den after the birth, he will be instructing whom ever is chosen, where it would be best placed.  Kathy Bear does not want the nuts too close to where her baby might try to eat any and choke.  As for leaves and fur, a nice nest type of bed will be constructed around mother and cub after the birth.

Normally the news is put out monday to friday but this monday was a bit different.  Seems your marsh reporter was unable to put together a news story and for that, I am very sorry.  This news story was entered late due to my ISP provider.  Once again, they have let me down.

No News Is Good News

Well it was just another cold and wet day here at the marsh.  Not much was going on as so many of our local residents stayed inside today trying to avoid this terribly wet weather.  I have to admit, I wasn't in any mood to tromp around in the marsh and look for a story either.  Fact being, what a great time to throw an editorial in.  Some point of view from me, your news reporter.

Now pondering, as I tilt my head from side to side, I am really searching my brain for something that you might find worthy enough to read.  I could easily write about the weather at this time of year and just how dark the days normally are but I am certain no one would find that of interest.  I do wonder how many of readers would like to know about the northern lights we get here so frequently.  Northern lights are beautiful to watch, they can be so dang noisy and have been known to keep certain auditory sensitive animals awake at night and that on it's own could be a great story ... but not for today.

Maybe not having a specific topic is good.  Life has way too many issues that people have deal with every day and if here at the marsh, we have a day with no events, then we can say it's been a good day.  I bid you all a good day and my life limit the impact of drama and events.

Alan Beaver Moves Slide
12/14/06

Alan Beaver has decided it's time to build on to his house.  Although his family slide has been on the north end of the marsh, with the new construction of his addition, he has felt that maybe it is time to change the location of the slide as well.  The marsh building inspector was out there today to look at the plans that Alan Beaver intended to implement and felt that all was clear and gave Alan Beaver a go ahead.

There is a lot of things to consider before construction could take place.  With regards to all residents, there was special care and planning done to protect nearby neighbors of Alan Beaver, trying not to impose or infringe on anyone around him.  Marvin Mole was almost an obstacle in the planning phase but when Marvin realized that his hole would cause Alan Beavers plan to come to a grinding halt, Marvin offered to more his hole to the other side of the poplar trees.  All Alan Beaver really needed was an additional two feet but Marvin Mole's move gave him an additional seven feet of clearance.

henry Our Helping Henry
12/13/06
Mash Press

Today in the news,  Henry Ermine has announced today that he will be offering tunnel services to small marsh critters that are normally shut in during the winter.  He said and we quote, "Because my family and I do all our hunting outside of the marsh, we do have to continue to tunnel under the snow in order to commute and we would be honored to swing past anyone hole, rock or stump and open a trail for those needing to make it to the waters edge."

Keeping in mind how close we are to the yearly expected Christmas snow, for some, this news is a blessing.  It is expected that this year we will see a fair amount of wet and heavy snow which will only create major problems for our elderly and very young.  The seniors at the bog living complex are planning to take advantage of sales on blankets and winter supplies this week for many stores are reducing prices hoping to rid most of their merchandise before the Christmas holidays.

Like always, residents of the marsh all pull together and help each other during the tuff times and this year, everyone will be doing what they can to help each other out.  Keep an eye on further weather related news stories.  You never know, being informed could prove beneficial to you.

news_babbit  LIFE ALMOST LOST
12/12/06

Today we almost lost a dear and wonderful
      resident of the marsh,
Willow Babbit
      from the east side
bog fell into the
      Upland Swamp.
Nearby resident from the
      pine
tree had heard a commotion and
glanced to see two long furry ears sticking
out of the water.  With past temperatures
having already reached to freezing, Ollie Snapper has already dug deep into the mud for his long winters rest,
which made rescue a bit tricky. Ollie, being the only in water rescue unit, meant that the marsh only had air units available.  Things did look rather grim for Willow Babbit as hypothermia was beginning to set in.

The temperatures were above freezing today and the rain was constant.  Current in the swamp was a little stronger than normal and the water level was beginning to rise.  As the wind began to pick up, the fear that our eagle air unit might arrive too late to rescue Willow was a major concern.  We were most fortunate that Arnie Eagle did arrive and plucked Willow from the swamp.  Willow is now home resting comfortably.
